On Saturday, November 2, the North Carolina 4-H Livestock Program hosted this year’s Southeastern Regional Livestock Judging Contest in conjunction with the N.C. State Fair at the NCSU Beef Unit in Raleigh, N.C.
Open to teams from throughout the country, this contest offers teams an opportunity to judge, answer questions and give reasons as the national contest season begins. A skillathon contest is also offered the day after livestock judging.
This year, Florida 4-H was represented by two teams, Union County 4-H and Putnam County 4-H.
Representing Union County 4-H, their team included Hunter Williams, Kendal Stalnaker, Abby Whittington and Tatum Howard. (Left/Top)
As a team, they placed sixth in swine, seventh in reasons, eighth in cattle, eighth in goats, tenth in sheep and eighth overall.
Individually, Stalnaker placed eighth in sheep, Whittington placed eighth in reasons, and Williams placed fifth in swine and nineteenth overall. They are coached by Jason Stalnaker.
Putnam County 4-H was represented by two members of their current state champion team – Dathan Guthrie and Emily Lands. (Right/Bottom)
Individually, Guthrie placed fourth in swine, seventh in goats and third overall, and Lands placed seventh in cattle and thirteenth overall. They are coached by Jerry Mullins.
A total of 16 teams and 69 individuals competed in this year’s contest. Congratulations to these youth on their successes, and best of luck to the Putnam County 4-H team as they advance to the national contest later this fall.
Livestock judging is an event designed to test the evaluation and decision making skills of students through evaluating market and breeding beef cattle, swine, sheep and meat goats as well as the defense of their placings via oral reasons.
