On Saturday, November 3, the 2018 Eastern National 4-H Horse Round-Up was held during the annual North American International Livestock Exposition at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville, Ky.
This event is the national competition for each of the six educational contests that the 4-H horse program offers. This year, Florida 4-H was represented in four of the contests, by your state winners from each.
For Horse Judging, Florida was represented by your current state champion team from Lake County 4-H, with team members Dominique Palka, Stephanie Walters, Iris Jackson and Katie Straub. Together, as a team, they placed ninth in the confirmation division, tenth in the performance division and tenth overall, with approximately 20 teams and 80 individuals competing in this year’s contest.
In the Hippology Contest, Florida was represented by your current reserve state champion team from Brevard County 4-H, made up of Megan Lee, Sophie Moutsatos, Emma Rosseau and Lexi Andress. As a team, they placed fifth in the judging division, with 22 teams and 88 individuals competing in the contest.
For Horse Public Speaking, Florida was represented by your state winner, Tara Holtzendorf from Union County 4-H, who placed twelfth in the contest with approximately 15 speakers competing.
Jacquelyn Griffith of Hernando County 4-H also earned the right to compete in the Individual Horse Demonstration Contest as your current state champion in that contest.
Many of these youth also competed on the regional level back in the summer on their journey to the national stage as well. Congratulations to each of these youth on their accomplishments, and best of luck to them in all of their future equine and other endeavors.
The Eastern National 4-H Horse Roundup provides a place for youth to compete nationally while encouraging teamwork and self-confidence, and while focusing on the 4-H Mission Mandates: STEM, Healthy Living and Citizenship. For more information and full results, visit www.4hroundup.com.
