From September 7-10, the National Swine Registry and National Junior Swine Association hosted this year’s National Barrow Show and NBS Junior Classic swine shows at the Mower County Fair in Austin, Minn. to include the annual NBS 4-H and FFA Livestock Judging Contest on Monday, September 9.

Events such as these by the National Swine Registry “aim to enhance the value of pedigreed swine, maintain breed integrity, and provide relevant member education and youth development experiences,” according to their website.

Florida was represented this year by your current Florida 4-H state champion livestock judging team from Putnam County 4-H, with team members Emily Lands, Clayton Brauman, Dathan Guthrie and Jarrett Kelley. They are coached by Jerry Mullins.

As a team, they were named as the reserve champion team overall, with 52 teams and 218 individuals competing in the contest.

Individually, Emily Lands was named as the eighth high individual overall, with Clayton Brauman placing thirteenth, Dathan Guthrie fifteenth and Jarrett Kelley twenty-second overall. (This contest is not broken into sub-divisions.)

Congratulations to this hard-working team on yet another amazing finish, and best of luck to them as they continue preparing for the National 4-H Livestock Judging Contest this fall.

Livestock judging is an event designed to test the evaluation and decision making skills of students through evaluating market and breeding beef cattle, swine, sheep and meat goats as well as the defense of their placings via oral reasons.
