From October 11-14, the annual National Junior Horticultural Association Convention was held this year in Lincoln, Neb. open to 4-H, FFA, National Grange and independent youth from around the nation in a variety of horticulture-related competitions.
This year, Florida 4-H was represented by Wakulla County 4-H member Alexis “Alie” Green in the Junior Horticulture ID Competition.
“In this activity…[youth] will learn to identify flowers, indoor plants, fruits, nuts and berries, landscape ornamentals and vegetables,” notes the competition regulations on the NJHA website.
Green placed in the top three in the state in this year’s Florida 4-H Horticulture ID and Judging Contest in Ocala back in June. Competing as an individual, Green placed seventh as an individual in the 10-14 year old division.
The top three individuals in the state contest qualify to compete in the open divisions of the Junior and Senior National Horticulture ID Competitions at the NJHA Convention. Escambia County 4-H also qualified for the national competition in the 4-H division as the winning senior team at the state contest, but did not attend.
Congratulations to this young lady on all of her accomplishments, and best of luck to her in the future in horticulture and beyond.
