From November 19 – 21, this year’s National 4-H Poultry and Egg Conference was held during the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, Ky. with Florida being represented in one of the contests.
“The National 4-H Poultry and Egg Conference recognizes senior 4-H members…who have excelled in their state 4-H poultry learning activities. The overall objective is to offer national level activities and contests designed to introduce participants to poultry and the poultry industry,” notes the event’s website. The conference is unique as it includes tours, a workshop and social events, in addition to the competitions.
Your state champion team from Marion County 4-H, with team members Brianna Zubieta, Gwyn Lynch and Isabel Dempsey (left photo), along with Dylan Ziglar from Jackson County 4-H, who qualified on the state level to compete as an individual (right photo), represented Florida 4-H as a team in the Poultry Judging Contest.
Together, they placed sixth overall as a team, with Zubieta placing fourth in the market egg division as an individual, with approximately 20 teams competing in this year’s contest.
Makenzie Greaves from Suwannee County 4-H also qualified for the National 4-H Chicken Barbecue Contest for winning first place in the poultry division of this year’s State 4-H Tailgating Contest, but did not compete.
The team from Gilchrist County 4-H, made up of Kalin Siegel, Landon Holtsclaw, Micah Holtsclaw and Toby Wood, also qualified to represent Florida in the National 4-H Avian Bowl Contest for winning second place in this year’s State 4-H Poultry Judging Contest, but did not compete.
