The number of youth in Florida who complete swine projects has grown exponentially over the last several years, from county fair swine shows, the ever-growing list of jackpot swine shows in Florida, at the Florida State Fair and regional and national-level show participation by Florida youth, at events such as NJSA shows, the World Pork Expo in Des Moines, Iowa and at the NAILE in Louisville, Ky. Swine are favored by youth for being known as relatively low maintenance projects compared to other species, the opportunity to explore pork production, and a chance to become a part of one of the largest youth livestock communities in Florida.
Commercially, Florida is not considered as a major pork producing state, but in recent years, the number of purebred and registered pigs has grown around the state as the show community expands, with the National Swine Registry reporting over 50 purebred litters registered in Florida at year-end 2019, according to their annual report. Swine shows in Florida commonly offer a division for "prospect" or "market" hogs, that can be split into barrow and gilt divisions, and some also offer divisions specifically for breeding gilts, as well as showmanship.
Listed on this page are swine shows open to all youth in Florida, unless otherwise stated, and are non-terminal (all animals return to the farm of the exhibitor after the show) and contain divisions for prospect/market hogs and/or breeding gilts, depending upon the show. Only shows located in Florida are listed here.
