If you or your youth have ever wondered what is inside (or outside) the chicken and the egg, poultry judging is for you. Though it is a smaller contest in our state, many youth, both younger and older, enjoy poultry judging and find success from the local to state and national levels while learning about some of the most popular agricultural commodities.

In this event, youth evaluate three types of eggs, ready to cook chicken and live birds. Classes are offered for interior eggs (graded based on quality/freshness), exterior eggs (graded based on cleanliness/quality) and broken out eggs (grades based on freshness). Chicken meat is evaluated through grading whole carcasses and identifying retail cuts found at the grocery store. Live birds are also judged based on how many eggs they are perceived to have laid. Youth are also often asked to defend their placings for the live birds through using public speaking skills to deliver oral reasons over their placing.

This contest is offered on the local, state and national levels for both 4-H and FFA, through the State FFA Poultry Evaluation CDE and the State 4-H Poultry Judging Contest.
